My Hero Academia | Mind Blowing Facts

My Hero Academia or Boku no Hero Academia is a manga and an anime series  authored by Kōhei Horikoshi. This anime gained worldwide popularity in a short time because of its unique concept. Here are some mind-blowing fun facts about My Hero Academia!

#1 One-shot for series came six years before the original manga

In 2008, creator Kohei Horikoshi published a shot in the Winter magazine of Akamaru Jump and titled “My Hero”. Then, this one-shot became the starting point for the original manga series as we know it today.

#2 Every character name or alias has a meaning

These are the examples:

  • Bakugo = baku (bomb) + go (power)
  • Denki Kaminari = denki (electric) + kaminari (thunder)
  • Tenya Iida = from Idaten, a Buddhist hero who is known to be “fast on his feet”
  • Ochaco Uraraka = uraraka (“fine day”) relates to Ochaco’s cheerful personality
  • Deku = double meaning, “puppet” and “dekiru” (someone who is able to do)

#3 Bubble & Centipeder are designed by fans

There is a contest for Japanese fans where winners Chiita Abara and Tetsuya Oohara get the chance to design these characters for the show. Chiita Abara originally designed Bubble as a 16-year-old student at U.A, but to turn her into a supportive hero, the anime made the character a bit older. While Tetsuya Oohara designed the Centipede character.

#4 Quirks came from random things

In My Hero Academia, 80% of Earth’s population has powers a.k.a. Quirks. People discover their Quirks when they turn 5. If a Quirk doesn’t show up by the age of 5, a person can be considered Quirkless for the rest of his or her life. Quirks are given by nature randomly. Similarly, the series’ creator had purely random inspiration when creating a character’s Quirk.

#5 Mina Ashido and Alien reference

Originally, Mina Ashido’s superhero name was named “Hero Ridley: The Queen of the Alien”, an obvious and blatant reference to director Ridley Scott’s 1971 Alien Film.

#6 Katsuki Bakugo was originally a kind-hearted character

The series creator, Kohei Horikoshi, initially wanted Katsuki Bakugo to be a kind and gentle hero. However, he later thought that such an idea might make the character boring, gutless, and uninteresting to fans since the main character, Midoriya, already has such traits.

#7 Tsuyu Asui and Toru Hagakure were supposed to be boys

Creator Kohei Horikoshi originally conceptualized them to be male characters. However, he realized that Class 1-A already has too many boys; so to balance the theme, he decided to change their genders.

#8 The most favorite character by fans

In a Japanese popularity poll, Deku came in first with 2,314 votes. Todoroki came in second with 1,987

#9 The comparison of My Hero Academia with Naruto
